Exercise that gives you energy, not takes it away
One of the most common reasons we don't start exercising is that life feels too stressful – or that we're simply too tired. But did you know that regular exercise can make you both more energetic and more resilient to stress? Exercising – at home, outside or at the gym – can actually give you back energy, not take it away.
If you often feel tired, it can feel extra difficult to get started, but at that moment, exercise can be exactly what your body needs to find its balance again. Start gently, listen to your body and focus on what makes you feel better – both here and now and in the long term.
Think about what you can replace or prioritize to make room for something that makes you stronger, both physically and mentally.
Motivation for exercise – start with why
To get started with exercise – and actually keep going – you need to know why you want to exercise. Setting a goal that feels meaningful to you creates an inner drive that lasts longer than quick results. It's easy to get caught up in thoughts about appearance or weight, but it's often more sustainable to start with how you want to feel – both now and in the long term.
Ask yourself: What do I long for in my everyday life? More energy? Less stress? A stronger me – both mentally and physically?
Here are examples of positive and motivating goals:
- I want to feel more energetic in everyday life
- I want to reduce my fatigue and get better sleep
- I want to be able to play with my children or walk up stairs without getting out of breath
- I want to relieve anxiety and stress
- I want to feel free and strong in my body
By having a goal that means something to you, it becomes easier to take that first step – and to continue even on days when it feels a little difficult.
How do you start exercising – for real?
Starting to exercise can feel overwhelming – especially if it’s been a while since you’ve exercised regularly, or if your body isn’t quite up to par. Maybe you’ve tried before but haven’t found a sustainable routine, or you’re unsure where to start. But the most important thing is not to do everything perfectly – but to actually take the first step, at your own pace.
Everyone has a different starting point, and there’s no right or wrong way to exercise. What works for someone else may not work for you at all – and that’s okay. Your journey is your own, and every little movement counts. Start where you are, with what you have, and build slowly.
Here are some concrete tips that can help you get started in a kind, realistic and sustainable way:
- Plan time for exercise
Exercise needs to be in your calendar, just like anything else. 20–30 minutes is often enough. Short sessions are better than none at all. - Work out at home, outside or at the gym
Do you want to work out at home with bodyweight exercises, go for a walk in nature or get energized in a group session at the gym? What feels easiest to get started with is often best. - Set a routine that works
Perhaps it works best to work out on the same days every week, or to include spontaneous movement when the opportunity arises. Keep it simple. - Find a form of exercise you like
Try different types of exercise: dance, yoga, strength, swimming, walking or something completely different. If you find it fun, you are more likely to continue. - Work out alone or together
Some people get more motivation from company, others want to exercise as their own time. Think about what you need. - Set soft goals
Your goal can be to reduce fatigue, become stronger in the body or feel better mentally. It doesn't have to be about performance - it can be about well-being. - Ask for help if you want
Do you feel unsure or have injuries? Then a physiotherapist or personal trainer can help you get started in a safe way. Customized training gives better results – and reduces the risk of setbacks.
