Quick version
- There are eight blood groups: A+, A−, B+, B−, AB+, AB−, 0+ and 0− (based on the AB0 system and Rh factor).
- Most common blood group in Sweden: 0+ (~32%) and A+ (~30%).
- Uncommonest blood group: AB− (only about 1% of the population).
- How to find out your blood group:
- With a blood sample or blood group test
- Sometimes it is available via your medical record (e.g. at 1177)
- If you have previously donated blood
- Why is it good to know? For blood donation, pregnancy, genetic information or in case of accidents.
What is a blood group?
The blood group system is divided according to the antigens (proteins) that are on the surface of your red blood cells. The two most important systems are:
- AB0 system: You can have blood group A, B, AB or 0 (zero).
- Rh factor: You are either Rh-positive (+) or Rh-negative (−).
Together, these give eight different blood groups: A+, A−, B+, B−, AB+, AB−, 0+ and 0−.
Which blood group is most common in Sweden?
In Sweden, the most common blood group is 0+, which is found in about 32% of the population, and A+, which is found in about 30% of the population. These blood groups are particularly important for blood donation, as they can be given to many others.
The rarest blood group is AB-, which only about 1% of Swedes have. People with this blood group can only receive blood from others with AB−, which makes it extra sensitive in case of anemia.
How do I know what blood group I have?
There are several ways to find out what blood group you have:
- Through a blood test – with a blood group test you quickly and easily get a complete answer to what blood group you have – including your Rh factor.
- Through your medical record – sometimes your blood group is stated in your medical record, e.g. at 1177.
- If you have donated blood – then the blood center can notify you of your blood type.
Keeping track of your blood type can be particularly relevant if you:
- Want to become a blood donor
- Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
- Want to know more about your genetic background
- Want to be prepared in the event of an accident
