More and more pregnant women are choosing NIPT – that's why interest is growing so quickly

Have you recently found out that you are pregnant – and are wondering what tests might be relevant? Then you may have heard of NIPT, a simple blood test that provides early information about the fetus's chromosomes. Interest in the test has increased significantly in Sweden, and in our major cities today every third pregnant woman chooses to do it. But why has NIPT become so popular – and what is important to consider before making a decision?

A growing trend among expectant parents

More and more pregnant women – and their partners – are choosing to have NIPT today, regardless of whether they have already received a good result on the KUB test or not. What was once a test reserved for pregnant women with an increased risk, has now become an increasingly common choice even among women who do not belong to any risk group. The trend indicates that NIPT is no longer seen as an option only when necessary, but as a natural step in many pregnancies.

For some, it is about getting extra confirmation. For others, it is about minimizing uncertainty. Being able to get reliable information as early as week 10 – and also without any risk to the fetus – weighs heavily in a time when more and more people prioritize knowledge, control and security.

What does an NIPT test involve?

NIPT stands for Non-Invasive Prenatal Test and involves taking a regular blood sample from the pregnant woman. There are small amounts of the fetus's DNA in the blood, and this is what is analyzed. The test can provide answers to whether the fetus has certain chromosomal abnormalities – such as Down syndrome (trisomy 21), Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18) and Patau syndrome (trisomy 13).

It is a safe, quick and painless test – with no risk of miscarriage.

For many, it is about getting early reassurance – knowing a little more about how the fetus is doing, without having to wait for a later ultrasound or doing risky procedures such as amniocentesis.

Simple – but not without questions

The fact that NIPT is risk-free for the fetus is a great advantage. But the test also raises questions. How do you, as prospective parents, want to handle a possible deviant result? What does this mean for your pregnancy, your relationship and the future?

There is no right or wrong here – but it is wise to talk through these thoughts in advance. Many midwives recommend thinking about the purpose of the test: Do you want answers to reduce anxiety? To prepare yourself? Or to be able to make a difficult decision if something turns out to be wrong?

Being mentally prepared can help you accept the information, regardless of what the answer shows.

Many experience increased security

For many pregnant women and their partners, NIPT above all means a sense of control and peace of mind. Knowing that the test showed nothing abnormal can make it easier to enjoy the pregnancy and let go of some of the anxiety. And if something does turn out to be abnormal, there is time to find out more, get support and plan for what lies ahead.

A personal decision – with the right to guidance

Having an NIPT test is a personal choice. It may feel right to some and unnecessary to others. Regardless of what you choose, you have the right to clear information, support and conversation – both before and after the test. Ask your midwife, discuss together, and choose what feels right for you.
