What is a blood test and how does a blood test work?
During the actual blood sampling, blood is taken from a vein, usually in the armpit. A small needle is used to collect the blood into one or more test tubes, which are then sent to the laboratory for analysis. The procedure itself only takes a couple of minutes, and you can return to your normal activities immediately afterwards.
You choose where you want to leave your blood sample. You can submit a blood sample at Karolinska in Stockholm or at Unilabs, Synlab etc. We offer blood sampling at 160 different receptions around Sweden, it is very common to be able to leave blood samples at drop-in times, and these are often located at a health center or hospital near you.
Fasting before blood test
Some blood tests require you to fast before taking the sample, this means that you should not eat or drink anything other than water for 10 hours before the sample is taken. One to two glasses of water are fine to drink while you are fasting. It is also fine to drink coffee and tea when you are fasting, but without milk, sugar or sweeteners, etc.
During which blood tests should one be fasting?
Common blood tests that require fasting are:glucose ,iron ,triglycerides, testosterone free free andtotal testosterone (applies to men). These individual blood samples are often included in our larger health checks and health test packages. What applies to your specific test, you can see in the information "Prior to testing" on the test you are going to take.
In addition to fasting before a blood test, it is also important to know that certain blood values can vary depending on the time of day, this is called diurnal variation. With blood samples that have diurnal variation, it is important that the sampling takes place at the right time, especially for tests that measure hormones such as cortisol or iron levels. This is stated in the information "Prior to testing" on the test you are going to take.
Blood tests and alcohol
When it comes to alcohol and blood tests, there are several different tests you can perform,PEth andCDT are two markers that can give a good indication of your alcohol consumption. When you submit a blood sample for alcohol, you do not need to fast before the sample is taken.
Analysis and results of blood samples
The blood sample is analyzed at one of the following laboratories in Sweden, Karolinska, Synlab and Unilabs to examine various health parameters. It can be about everything from measuring blood sugar levels to analyzing hormone levels such as testosterone and estradiol, checking cholesterol levels, alcohol consumption or detecting infections.
The results of your blood test are usually obtained within 1-5 days after you have submitted your blood test and will give you insight into your health regarding these values. You choose whether you want to share your test results with, for example, your doctor or other relevant professional.
