What is the ratio out of Apo B/Apo A1?
By measuring Apolipoprotein B and Apolipoprotein A1, you get the ratio of these that reflects the balance, which is a good measure for assessing the risk of suffering from cardiovascular diseases. A desirable level for men is < 0.70 and women < 0.60. If values exceed 0.90 for men and 0.80 for women, this indicates an increased risk.
A combination with many LDL particles and few HDL particles in the blood is linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease.
Health Markers
To calculate the ratio from Apo B and Apo A1, the following markers are ordered:
- Apo B/Apo A1 (ratio)
- Apolipoprotein B
- Apolipoprotein A1
About Apolipoprotein B (Apo B) and Apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA)
Blood fat disorders (lipid metabolism) give an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Apolipoprotein B (Apo B) is the protein component of LDL cholesterol, also called "the bad cholesterol". Apolipoprotein B contributes to the transport of LDL cholesterol and can cause the LDL cholesterol to stick to the walls of the blood vessels, which in itself can lead to a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA) is found in HDL cholesterol, which is our "good" cholesterol as it has anti-inflammatory properties. Apolipoprotein A1 transports excess cholesterol from our cells to the liver for burning, which contributes to reduced fat deposits in the blood vessels.
