The HbA1c test is often used to monitor and control blood sugar levels, measuring how much glucose (sugar) has been bound to red blood cells over a period of about 3 months, in people with diabetes and can also be used to diagnose diabetes mellitus in adults and non-pregnant adults.
By regularly testing your HbA1c value, you can get a better overview of your long-term sugar health and prevent serious complications such as cardiovascular disease.
When diagnosing diabetes mellitus type-2, diagnostic criteria are two HbA1c samples >48 mmol/mol or one sample >48 mmol/mol at the same time as P-Glucose (fasting or after glucose load) is above the limit for diabetes. HbA1c >48 mmol/mol does not exclude diabetes.
